THE HARBOUR DASH - 2ND OCTOBER '11
The Harbour Dash is a fantastic windsurfing event that has been running annually in Weymouth for over 30 years. It was founded in memory of Brian Matthews, who died in January 1986, the day after his 60th birthday. Brian learnt to windsurf in 1979, having been taught by Phil Gollop at his original set up of a few lock-ups at the end of Old Castle Road. The concept of the Harbour Dash came about because Brian was always the first for a seafaring adventure, sailing from the harbour to Overcombe or Ringstead regularly. The event has been cared for and nurtured by Norm Petty for the last decade, the prize for the winner being the Brian Matthews Memorial Cup.
The format of the event is quite simple. It's a race from Overcombe to Portland Harbour, where you dip inside the wall via the north shipping channel, and back out into the bay via the east shipping channel. It's then a quick zip back to the beach, finishing the same point that you started.
Whilst stuff of legend, the event has always been quite a low-key affair. The title for the fastest time has been held by local champ Adie Bugler for more than 20 years, and is crying out to be challenged. The ideal wind direction for a fast run is said to be west to north west. Will this year prove to be the year where the record is finally broken? Cost for entries is £15 on the day, covering the cost of the rescue boats. Any additional money raised will be donated to local charity - the Will Mackaness Trust, founded in memory of a young windsurfing enthusiast whose legacy has helped inspire and encourage many students from local schools into water sports.
The event will take place from Overcombe car park on 2nd October. Please ensure you have paid and displayed and ready to go by 11.00am. For more information, call The OTC on 07817 717904, or email: info@otc-windsurf.com.

Weymouth Videos
Last weekend marked the return of British slalom windsurfing to Weymouth, hosted by The OTC at their new UK venue - the WPNSA, which will play host to the Olympic Sailing Classes in 2012.
Whilst the wind didn't quite play ball on the first day, the master blaster and Serenity relay race provided more than enough entertainment... And after the slow start to Sunday (due, in part, to the party the Saturday night) the wind increased and supplied the necessaries to complete five full rounds of competition.
Many thanks to Reuben Ellis for putting these event videos together - great job!

BSA Weymouth Welcome Pack
Here's a quick snap shot of the welcome pack and its contents for each competitor that enters the Weymouth BSA event this weekend.
First and foremost, Marlow Ropes have been kind enough to provide everyone with 4.00m of Formuline rope - the best rope you can get for your outhaul and downhaul. There's the latest copy of BOARDS Magazine, and brochures from Tushingham and The OTC. There is also an 'Handy Local Information' sheet, giving you taxi numbers, pub and restaurant locations and directions to the closest shops. The sheet also has elevations of OTC UK's set up on the back - something to look forward to in the not too distant future.
All this is contained in a bag from Fat Face, who have also been kind enough to donate some prizes for the event. Other prizes up for grabs include a fantastic O'Neil Wind Freak wetsuit and a brand new 2010 Tushingham sail of your choice!
All this plus taster sessions, demo kit and a party with a live band (hopefully)! Come and be part of the fun.

Weymouth Event This Weekend!
The British Slalom Association Series continues in its return to the premier windsurfing spot of Weymouth for round two.
The forecast is changing daily, but there should be enough wind for the three fleets to compete on both days. Throw into the melting pot lots of demo kit from Starboard/Tushingham, taster sessions for newcomers and expert advice on tap from OTC staff and it's an event not to be missed.
There will also be a mass of prizes to be won, from a new Tushingham rig, to the latest O'Neill Freak Wind wetsuit; clothes and gift vouchers from Fat Face and much more. Plus, everyone who enters gets a 4.00m length of Marlow Formuline rope in their welcome pack - the best rope a windsurfer can get!
Unfortunately the live band - Korsak - booked in for the evening party have now become VAVs and are stuck out in Tenerife, but the local organisers are not to be outdone and are putting feelers out for a replacement act.
For more information on how to get there and what to bring, visit our Next Event Page or log onto the UKWA Website.

Korsak become VAVs!
Korsak, the band scheduled to play in the evening party of the BSA event in Weymouth, have become VAVs - Volcanic Ash Victims - and are no longer able to make the gig. Stranded in Tenerife, they are as gutted as the BSA organisers, as the gig was due to kick-start their UK tour. The tour has now been postponed until July, and we hope they can headline a BSA party in the future. Until then we'll leave you with this video of Korsak playing one of their own songs - I Love to Look into Your Eyes. Enjoy.
P.S. We're working hurredly to try and organise another live band ... watch this space.
